Monday, today, official practice is underway and several Elite Series pros are lined up and ready to go… but not to practice. No, these Elite Series pros know all about floods and devastation and that’s why several of them have put down their rods and picked up shovels, rakes and hand trucks to help a local school in Orange, Texas recover from recent flooding.
Spearheaded by Plano Tackle pro, Mike Frenette who saw a need and wanted to do more, in his words, than “just come to town to fish and win money, sure it’s the Classic, but somethings are just more important”.
Mike went on to say, “It’s amazing to see so many giving up a major part of their practice time to come out and help, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, that’s the kind of guys we have on the Elite Series”.
Very well said Mike and a great testament to the type of anglers that make up not just the Elite Redfish Series but redfishing in general, we are just proud to have the support of so many fine anglers and people.
Saturday, the day before official practice began for the 2016 Elite Redfish Series Classic, the pros of the series were taking part in “pro days” sponsored by the Greater Orange Chamber of Commerce, Granger Chevrolet, Sabine River Ford and some of the other local businesses or Orange, TX..
Some of the Yellowfin Elite Series pros in town and taking part included, former LSU and NFL turned Elite Series pro, Nicky Savoie, 2016 Elite Series rookie Scott Ayers, South Carolina pro, Jamie Hough, Jay Cedotal, 2014 and 2015 Angler of the Year, Paul Dufrene and others.
As these pros converged on Sabine River Ford in Orange and Granger Chevrolet in Orange, Texas they were welcomed by staff and customers of each location and made to feel “right at home” according to several reports and updates given to the tour by those in attendance.
After the day’s activities it was time for 2 Yellowfin Elite Series anglers, LMC Marine Center and frogg toggs pro Ray Malone and Plano Tackle pro Mike Frenette to speak at the First Baptist Church of Orange about faith, family and of course fishing.
What a great job the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce representatives have done at hooking up our pros with locals and at venues that highlight what many of these guys have a reel (on purpose spelling) passion for, people! We have heard that upon finishing the pastor walked up to each of these 2 pros and handed them and unexpected “gift” in an envelope. “What is this they asked”, the pastor explained, “we just wanted to show our appreciation for your time and talents in speaking to our group tonight”…
Both pros immediately realized the very generous checks in each of their envelopes had a higher purpose.”We are going to sign these and give them right back, you pastor, please make sure someone that really needs this will benefit from it”, Mike Frenette told him and went on to say “we know all about flooding in Louisiana and we know there are folks in your community hurting and we want to help them”.
The pastor reluctantly gave in and accepted the returning of the gifts and assured them he’d make sure a family in need received it.
“We have one family now that is living in a tent” the pastor told them… Mike said, “sounds like the perfect family to me”. What an honor to associate with so many good people that do great things, in the midst of their own turbulence… kudos and to Mike, Ray and all the anglers that participated today in the activities around the city of Orange, TX. here’s a tip of the hat and a pat on the back, you guys really are… PROS!
